We all strive to rid ourselves of excess hoses and dangling equipment, to become one with the sea. And, combining an octopus with a BC power inflator is probably the most elegant and effective means of achieving improved equipment simplicity.

In an ongoing effort to further streamline and simplify the diver, Sea Quest has completely redesigned its high performance octopus/BC power inflator, the Air Source, for 1998. The new design incorporates a streamlined utility and sleek look into a lightweight case. The new Air Source is a smart, compact, low profile second stage with ergonomically positioned inflation/deflation buttons. Best of all, it performs efficiently, is easy breathing and well within most divers' budgets.

Overall, the new Air Source is 47 percent lighter than the original. And, its new look is thoroughly updated. The improved ergonomics emphasize ease of use. The blue power inflation button on the back is readily differentiated from the larger black air dump/manual inflation button found on the front. The soft touch purge is on the very end of the Air Source.

In the past, the main problem with combination backup second stages/ BC power inflators has been the difficulty of breathing from them. Sea Quest engineers seem to have conquered this. The new Air Source delivered air with equal ease from the surface to about 90 feet during my trial run with it. It purged quickly and easily, and rested comfortably in my mouth because the Trimline hose is nicely flexible. The mouthpiece fit well and securely, owing to the upper and lower bite tabs.

The Trimline hose design features a groove that integrates the LP hose. This reduces the hose profile into an orderly combination of two necessary apparatus.Oral inflation and breathing are done using the same mouthpiece. Air can be vented or buoyancy trimmed (with the power inflator) while using the Air Source as a second stage. Air is vented while the second stage is in use via the Trim Grip. About halfway up the Trimline hose, the Trim Grip is a handhold that allows you to tug on the hose without dislodging the mouthpiece.

Tugging on the hose, of course, activates the dual valve at the shoulder for venting air. Air may also be vented via the oral inflation/deflation valve.Any device that reduces equipment needs without sacrificing diver safety is always welcome in the diving world-especially one that functions as well as the Air Source. It brings us in closer harmony to the underwater environment by freeing us from unnecessary encumbrances. And, since the price for the complete Air Source system is $226, the news is all good.
